When you already have 8.1 installed, there are two means to install 10: you can practise a clean installation or an upgrade.
If you do a make clean installation, information technology begins by formatting your drive, thereby removing everything on the drive-- all your programs, data files, etc.
If you do an upgrade, it's installed over the top of what's already there, and so you should lose nothing. So be sure to choose an upgrade, not a make clean installation.
*Still* doing an upgrade is a big footstep, and when you take a big step step, things *can* go wrong. So it's prudent to exist sure you accept a fill-in on external media of all the files important files important to you.
1 other point: your question suggests that you lot don't practice regular backups of all your important files. If that's the instance you lot've been playing with fire. Almost anybody should be backing upward to external media regularly. Information technology is always possible that a hard drive crash, user mistake, nearby lightning strike, virus assault, even theft of the reckoner, can cause the loss of everything on your drive. As has ofttimes been said, it's not a matter of whether you lot volition take such a problem, but when.
